The thing is, homosexuality was less of a stigma and basically just accepted by most cultures until the whole anti-gay movement started taking ground in America. This made gays a pretty big focal point, but I think the major event bringing them into the spotlight was AIDS. Now being gay and such is a big deal. Where as a hundred or so years ago, very few knew or cared about it. But still in other countries its really not a big issue.
