Just too many co-incidences for me to be happy accepting that this was legitimate. The amount of money dumped into MLB by rabid yankees fans even in a rough economy might JUST be enough for a furtive handshake to have taken place before the ribbon was cut on the new stadium. If nothing else, they've purchased the WS 'legitimately' thanks to the lack of salary caps. |

This guy sums up EXACTLY how I feel.
http://www.derok.net/derok/yankees.html Because the at the heart of the problem with Yankees fans is not that they're just too stupid to realize that their team's idea of a farm system is the other 28 teams in the league. The real problem is that Yankees fans think that somehow they're better than every other teams fans. The reason they think that Yankee haters are jealous is because they believe that their organization and fan base is inherently superior. |

Go pound salt. This is really the only place that I can vent my frustration against them. My father and brother are die-hard yankees fans, though I'll forgive my father since he's been a fan of them since they were actually a sports team... My in-laws....good lord. They grew up in the Bronx and have raised their two sons in the animalistic culture that is yankees hero worship. So I have to keep my mouth shut when I visit. Luckily, my wife escaped that and has a general apathy towards all sports. I think its why I married her. |

Haha, sucks for you Reb, I've had several discussions almost identical to your post above my last one. They just buy the best team, it's stupid.

Let's imagine that a salary cap existed. Do you honestly think they would be much worse? If all 30 MLB teams offered Mark Teixeira the exact same amount of money, I guarantee you he goes to the Yankees anyways. Roster Breakdown: 25 players Acquired by Trades or Waivers: 7 (28%) Yankees Farm System Products: 12 (48%) Major League Free Agents: 6 (24%) Rule 5: 0. Oh, and if the Yankees didn't have all that money to throw around you could kiss the lower salary teams in the MLB goodbye, since the Yankees luxury tax wouldn't pay to keep their sorry franchises afloat.

I don't know how you can even say that with any amount of certainty. It you take money out of the equasion, what would be the draw to the NY yankees? Why wouldn't people stick to geographic or sentimental reasons for going to/staying with a team like the old days? No, if you take away the millions, the yankees empire would collapse and you would have what could be an interesting sport again. Perhaps their farm team is the biggest source for their roster, but their checkbook is what ties these people to them. Think about it. Teams like the Brewers or the Padres....you're telling me that they're just awful, and the fact that other teams out there are offering a single player a higher salary than their entire roster has nothing to do with them gaining/retaining talent? If that's what you're saying, you're as blind a fool as the rest of them. .....no offense. ![]() |

You just shot yourself in the foot with this one. So....the YANKEES money is keeping other teams going? Neat, but tell me what chance these 'sorry franchises' have to become anything but when they're being supported by a corporation like the yankees? |

Drafts and Salary Caps FTW. Keeps stars spread out and makes sports interesting.

Oh man, the other day a really dumb friend of a friend was surprised to learn that the players on pro sports teams aren't all from the city they're playing for. They honestly thought every Vancouver Canuck was from Vancouver.

Amen to that. One of the reasons I like Baltimore so much is that despite being an awful team, they can (or at least used to) beat the yankees fairly regularly. |

Whenever someone asks me my favorite MLB team, I always answer the Orioles. I might not watch now, but when I was younger I always rooted for them. |

I used to listen to them on the radio when I was younger. Somehow, up here in NY, I was able to pick up WTOP when they broadcast the Oriole games, and I've been a follower (not so much a fan) ever since.

First of all, feel free to offer proof that most players have ever chosen where they play based on geographic reasons. Second, sentimental reasons could also include...oh, I don't know...winning? The draw to the Yankees will be, and has always been, that they are absolutely dedicated to winning. Having the most fans and the most media coverage might play a role, too. NYC being one of the greatest cities on Earth might be a draw... Also...in 2005, the Yankees and Red Sox combined to put 165 million dollars into the revenue sharing fund. If that value represented another team, it would be the 14th highest revenue in the MLB. |
