NHL really should cut about half their teams though. Have more Canadian teams, and less teams in the USA...all in places where it is actually possible to play hockey outdoors. |

What does that have to do with being a Yankee fan? If they need the assistance of other teams just to remain solvent, would it not be better to just cut the cord?

If that were the case, the NHL would cease to exist. The Canadian teams would stomp on the US teams, requring two seperate leagues

Gotcha. So it IS about turning a profit.....Yankees fan to the core. And I can't offer proof that players would choose a team for geographic reasons.....because it hasn't happened, the dollar has always stood in the way. Yes, the yankees are dedicated to winning, and will pay any price to anyone to get it. THAT is my problem with them. If they can't win with what they have, No problem, dump a few million into the program next season and do it again. Granted, all professional sports teams do the same thing to an extent, but the disgusting amount of money that the yankees are willing to pay someone to swing a bat- just to keep them out of the hands of their opposing teams, is really annoying and not in keeping with the traditions of the game. Maybe they don't deserve a team if they can't make a profit... |

First of all, feel free to offer proof that most players have ever chosen where they play based on geographic reasons. Second, sentimental reasons could also include...oh, I don't know...winning? The draw to the Yankees will be, and has always been, that they are absolutely dedicated to winning. Having the most fans and the most media coverage might play a role, too. NYC being one of the greatest cities on Earth might be a draw... Also...in 2005, the Yankees and Red Sox combined to put 165 million dollars into the revenue sharing fund. If that value represented another team, it would be the 14th highest revenue in the MLB. |

I played baseball for 6 years, never really watched it, but I've always hated the Yankees

I used to listen to them on the radio when I was younger. Somehow, up here in NY, I was able to pick up WTOP when they broadcast the Oriole games, and I've been a follower (not so much a fan) ever since.

Whenever someone asks me my favorite MLB team, I always answer the Orioles. I might not watch now, but when I was younger I always rooted for them. |

Amen to that. One of the reasons I like Baltimore so much is that despite being an awful team, they can (or at least used to) beat the yankees fairly regularly. |

My favorite team is whoever is playing the yankees that particular week.

Oh man, the other day a really dumb friend of a friend was surprised to learn that the players on pro sports teams aren't all from the city they're playing for. They honestly thought every Vancouver Canuck was from Vancouver.

Drafts and Salary Caps FTW. Keeps stars spread out and makes sports interesting.

You just shot yourself in the foot with this one. So....the YANKEES money is keeping other teams going? Neat, but tell me what chance these 'sorry franchises' have to become anything but when they're being supported by a corporation like the yankees? |

I don't know how you can even say that with any amount of certainty. It you take money out of the equasion, what would be the draw to the NY yankees? Why wouldn't people stick to geographic or sentimental reasons for going to/staying with a team like the old days? No, if you take away the millions, the yankees empire would collapse and you would have what could be an interesting sport again. Perhaps their farm team is the biggest source for their roster, but their checkbook is what ties these people to them. Think about it. Teams like the Brewers or the Padres....you're telling me that they're just awful, and the fact that other teams out there are offering a single player a higher salary than their entire roster has nothing to do with them gaining/retaining talent? If that's what you're saying, you're as blind a fool as the rest of them. .....no offense. ![]() |

Oh, and if the Yankees didn't have all that money to throw around you could kiss the lower salary teams in the MLB goodbye, since the Yankees luxury tax wouldn't pay to keep their sorry franchises afloat.

Let's imagine that a salary cap existed. Do you honestly think they would be much worse? If all 30 MLB teams offered Mark Teixeira the exact same amount of money, I guarantee you he goes to the Yankees anyways. Roster Breakdown: 25 players Acquired by Trades or Waivers: 7 (28%) Yankees Farm System Products: 12 (48%) Major League Free Agents: 6 (24%) Rule 5: 0. Haha, sucks for you Reb, I've had several discussions almost identical to your post above my last one. They just buy the best team, it's stupid.
