So I'm pretty much a complete mess. This past week has been well, and it's only half way over. So let me give you a little history/catchup leading up to now...
This girl I know is pretty much like family. She's 20, and our moms have been best friends since they were little. Our families are closer knit than most people's blood reletives; we go on vacations together, do holidays together, all that stuff. I have known her since I was born, and we are just really tight. When she was a kid, she developed some type of disease; apparently like a 1 in a million chance. Unlike a normal person, her veins grow a lot faster...too fast where they have no where to go. Eventually, they start to split and spider out creating like a web, but once it gets to big, it starts to wrap around stuff, constricting blood flow to major parts of the body-in her case, mainly her uterus and a little bit of her spine. Doctor's thought she would grow out it by puberty. But, because of this disease, she has very thin vaginal walls, and every once in a while, it ruptures and she bleeds like crazy. Fast forward until now. She obviously visits the doctors very often for checkups, and there are only a few doctors around the world who kind of sort of think they have a little clue on how to tackle her problem (the veins). She still bleeds a lot though in the meantime every once in a while (HUGE problem, I'll get to that in a bit). So, a a few weeks ago, she was having some inspection surgery, basically to see what the most recent activity was and if her past treatment was working. During this time when she was being probed with cameras and what not, she got a laceration (remember her skin is super thin). She started bleeding, but the doctors were able to pack her (like they do after a prego lady gives birth) and glue the laceration, give her a blood transfusion, and release her from the hospital. Now, Tuesday, she's in the shower, bends over to get soap or something, and the glue breaks, the laceration opens, and she starts bleeding like crazy. Someone was at her house, takes her to the hospital while we get a call from her mom ( I was taking my driving test, so I was out of school) that we needed to get to the hospital asap, she was kind of far away. Every time she starts to bleed, it's like a race to the hospital because someone has to get there to stop the doctors from doing "normal" procedure (they assume she's having a miscarriage, so they start poking around, causing more damage than good). We get there, make the doctors pack her, and get in contact with her doctor in the Bronx. The amount of blood was indescribable, she lifted her shorts spandex strap, and it was pooling up against her skin..she was bleeding through her underwear, shorts, and a towel onto the cot, in about 15 minutes before they changed her beds. It was like the most heart wrenching experience, and then they started sticking her with needles, IV, taking blood counts, samples, she was crying holding my hand, it was just terrible...So they knocked her out, packed her after we had to pretty much tackle the doctor to not get him to treat it like a miss carriage, and she went to the operating room for a blood transfusion (her blood count was like 1/2 of what it should be), and then today they took her to her hospital in NY by ambulance to the doctor who thinks he knows a little bit on how to help. The whole situation just sucks, I feel so bad. I'm getting behind on school stuff because I have been visiting her and leaving early, not going to school. Sorry for the long post, I'm just mentally, physically, and emotionally drained, I'm losing my mind...had to vent a little. |

I'm sorry to hear about it. You're doing the right thing. Hopefully this doctor knows what can be done to help her out. In the meantime, I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Stay cool, buddy. It'll be alright.

Sounds like a scary situation for her to be in. It also sounds like she's got a great friend and family to help her through everything. It's especially hard when you're having to go to the ER every time something like this happens and are faced with new doctors that have no clue of your condition. Practitioners of emergency medicine tend to have their routines that they go through when they see certain symptoms. Sometimes those procedures and routines are counter productive to the real culprit and can cause a lot of havoc. I've seen it happen before, so it's a good thing that she's been in situations where there are people around to explain things. She may want to get a med-alert bracelet and card explaining what to do in future cases to keep in her wallet. That might wind up saving her life down the road.
Unfortunately for her, the options of treatment are going to be limited. Congenital diseases/defects such as she has are tough to study and even tougher to treat. They occur so rarely that doctors don't really get much of a chance to see what all is happening before things go wrong. Chances are, however, that the docs may be able to lessen the symptoms and problems created by the defect through more common methods. I wouldn't be surprised to see cauterization of the excess blood vessels in her uterus brought up as that would help to reduce the chances of the onset of massive blood loss like she's been seeing. I have enlarged veins, something that is a blessing in many ways but a curse in others. While I don't have to worry about blockages, blood clots, and cholesterol as much as a normal person my age does, I bleed out much more quickly and the proximity of such large veins and arteries to the surface of my skin has caused issues in the past. As a child I would often fall victim to nose bleeds out of nowhere. The air would be dry, my skin in my sinuses and around my septum would crack and the vessels would open up and literally gush blood out of my nose. We aren't talking a trickle here, we're talking enough that if I had a nose bleed in the middle of the night, it would soak the pillow, mat in my hair, and pool in my eyes within moments of it occurring. Cauterization of the veins in my nose that were close to the surface and enlarged to the point that they were troublesome has kept me from getting such incidents for quite some time now. I still get spotting (bloody mucous) in the winter and during allergy season due to the dry air or contaminants in the air, but the symptoms that plagued me are no longer present. I'm guessing that a similar option will be there for her, and while it may be risky, it may have some unwanted side effects, and it certainly won't be easy to do, her quality of life will be far better in the long run. |

Why does she not have a med alert bracelet? This would inform docs of her situation upon entering the OR or ICU and would just give her a safer environment.
You clearly care deeply about this girl so it would be in your best interest as well to have docs be informed of her condition in times when you cannot be there even though you want t be. Have her look into it for the future and good luck as well. |

Man that would be tough to have to be basically careful all of your life so that you don't have an accident and end up losing a lot of blood.
So can these veins be seen all over one's body? |

Goddamn man that's rough. She's lucky to have people like you around to help her when she's in need. Nice to see examples of good people out there.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I hope that they find something to help her situation or maybe even solve it completely. I will keep her in my prayers and so will the CPPA. Good luck and hopefully it all works out.

That really sucks man, I don't know what to tell you.
I've been through similar enough situations with friends of mine. It's always really hard. Here's hoping she pulls through. |
